Progress and Value Workshop Series. Purpose and Scope
Global Compact participants are meant to implement the Ten Principles in their organizations, and to annually report on their progress through the Communication on Progress report (COP). While all signatory companies have publicly and voluntarily subscribed to the Global Compact, many have also found some obstacles in the actual implementation of the ten principles and in the COP elaboration. As a response to such difficulties, the Barcelona Center launched the Progress and Value Workshop Series in 2006, in collaboration with Claude Fussler and Jeff Senne.
Progress and Value Workshops seek to clarify how making progress in the implementation of the 10 Principles and the elaboration of the Communication on Progress may entail the creation of value, not only at the social and environmental levels, but also economically, thus enhancing the company’s productivity, market share and competitive advantage. The initiative indeed was named after this precise link: Progress and Value – in short, P&V or P and V.
The P and V Workshops have two complementary facets, and target two kinds of audience.
The first are CSR managers of GC signatory companies looking for support in the implementation of the 10 principles and the COP elaboration. Progress and Value Workshops address such issues in a two and a half days training, clarifying the GC’s objectives and requirements, and relying on concrete management experiences allowing for intensive group work and peer-learning.
On the other hand, the majority of GC signatory members belong to a Local Network, to which they demand, precisely, support and coaching regarding implementation and reporting. Progress and Value Workshops are thus also intended to constitute a great product for Local Networks, who adapt the model to their local context, and then involve their membership onto the training.
The organization of Workshops by Local Networks entails a strong multiplier effect, strengthening and singling the initiative out. Local Networks thus play an essential role in the Progress and Value Workshop Series; the Barcelona Center is deeply committed to supporting them in their Progress and Value activities:
All Workshops together constitute the Progress and Value Workshop Series. Up to date, more than 700 people from over 50 countries have been trained, while more are under way! Participants include high level CSR managers, Local Networks representatives and UN Agencies among others.

- The Barcelona Center has developed the Progress and Value KIT, a set of documents and materials designed to support and ease the organization of local P&V Workshops.
- We also offer P&Vs in a training the trainers’ version. These aim specifically at Local Network representatives.
